Since it’s formation in 1946, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has been one of the world’s most ardent defenders of the rights of the young. In addressing such issues as basic education provision, HIV/AIDS hereditary transmission, and emergency conflict zone relief, UNICEF is a vital survival link for millions of the world’s most vulnerable children.
Another one of UNICEF’s core focus areas is ensuring the prevention and treatment of common diseases that plague child populations worldwide. It emphasizes that despite being a remarkably preventable condition, malaria poses as a huge threat to both the short-term health, and long-term prospects, of children in the Global South, particularly Africa. Accordingly, UNICEF has committed to reaching ambitious malaria-alleviation targets within the next decade, including reducing malaria mortality and morbidity by 75 percent in comparison with 2005, by 2015.
